MRI evaluation of white matter recovery after brain injury.

چکیده
We discuss the use of MRI in detecting and staging white matter reorganization after brain injury with and without neurorestorative treatment. Based on variations of diffusion tensor MRI (DTI) methodology, we demonstrate that MRI can detect white matter remodeling after brain injury. In addition, we demonstrate that Q-space DTI can detect early stage axonal remodeling, which involves randomly oriented crossing axons. With the information obtained from conventional and Q-space DTI, it is possible to stage white matter remodeling after brain injury.

Brain Volume Estimation Enhancement by Morphological Image Processing Tools
Background: Volume estimation of brain is important for many neurological applications. It is necessary in measuring brain growth and changes in brain in normal/abnormal patients. Thus, accurate brain volume measurement is very important. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for volume quantification due to excellent levels of image resolution and between-tissue contrast. St...
متن کاملMRI Finding in Delayed Extensive Brain Lesions after Radiation Therapy :Cortical Laminar Necrosis and White Matter Myelinolysis
The focal and diffuse cerebral white matter injury can be caused by treatment with radiation therapy for cranial tumors. However, the literature rarely describes a MRI finding in radiation-induced delayed extensive cerebral injury. Our objective was to report a rare case who had a delayed extensive hyperintensity injury in brain on MRI after radiation therapy due to nasopharyngeal cancer. A MRI...
متن کاملStructural Findings in the Brain MRI of Patients with Acute Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Background: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning may lead to hypoxic/anoxic injury and eventually ischemic encephalopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a well-recognized role in assessment of the severity of brain damage caused by CO poisoning. In this study, we aimed to present and analyze the structural abnormalities in the brain MRI and especially in diffusion weighted MRI (DWI) images in ...
متن کاملWhite matter hyperintensity penumbra.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are associated with progressive age-related cognitive decline and cardiovascular risk factors, but their biological relevance as indicators of generalized white matter injury is unclear. Diffusion tensor imaging provides more sensitive indications of subtle white matter disruption and can therefore clarify whether WMHs represent foci o...
متن کاملA Prospective Pilot Investigation of Brain Volume, White Matter Hyperintensities, and Hemorrhagic Lesions after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common neurological disorders. Hemorrhagic lesions and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) are radiological features associated with moderate and severe TBI. Brain volume reductions have also been observed during the months following injury. In concussion, no signs of injury are observed on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which may b...
